Welcome to Windrush, the alumnae organisation for Oxford University Women’s Boat Club. We are a vibrant community of successful women, brought together through our time in OUWBC, who have gone on to pursue excellence in a diverse mix of areas. Whilst separate to the current squad, we support them in their quest to continue the club’s rich tradition and turn the Thames dark blue each Spring.
The central aims of Windrush are fourfold: to foster a sense of community among OUWBC alumnae; to share and celebrate the varied successes of former oarswomen; to help promote women in sport, business and life; and to inspire and support the current and future OUWBC squads. Windrush supports lifelong friendships and provides a valuable social and professional network for all its members. Originally the name of our summer development squad, Windrush’s namesake is a tributary of the Thames running through the Cotswolds, joining the main river above Oxford.
Windrush activity centres around three main events each year; supporting the Blue Boat and Osiris on Boat Race Day in March/April, Champagne and Strawberries in the Saturday tea break at Henley Royal Regatta in July, and a late summer BBQ in September at the Fleming Boathouse in Wallingford. The latter is a great opportunity for alumnae and their families to meet - and row with - the current student athletes. All alumnae are warmly invited to join us and further details will be published as each event nears. Individual crews regularly host their own reunions, testament to the friendships forged at OUWBC, and we also host special one-off events, such as a Westminster Reception with our very own alumna MP.
Each year all members of the Blue Boat and Osiris are invited to join Windrush, creating an ever expanding community. However, we are always looking to re-connect with past oarswomen, so if you have lost touch and would like to be involved at any level - from simply receiving the newsletter to help organising events - please contact OUWBC@sport.ox.ac.uk
This year we have started an exciting new series of profiles to celebrate the continued success of our former oarswomen. Each Wednesday an OUWBC alumna will be featured on our social media channels and website - look out for the tagline #windrushwednesdays. If you would like to be featured or suggest a former crew mate, please contact email@example.com. Equally if you have some news you’d like to share with the Windrush community, please do get in touch.
