Cleopatra won the toss and chose the Surrey station, inadvertently leaving Boudicca with their preferred Middlesex station. Off the start, Cleopatra rated 39 strokes a minute, just higher than Boudicca's 38. With a strong start and the Middlesex bend to their advantage, Boudicca took an early lead and were close to a length ahead at Craven Cottage. As Boudicca came to the end of their course advantage, Cleopatra were able to start closing the margin between the two crews, rowing well in the tailwind conditions so that both boats came through Hammersmith Bridge level.

With the Surrey bend in their favour, Cleopatra began to strongly inch ahead, taking a two seat lead by the top of Chiswick Eyot. Boudicca however fared better in the strong headwind that was prevalent between the Eyot and the crossing point and managed to prevent Cleopatra from gaining full advantage of the Surrey bend. Approaching the Chiswick Steps crossing, Cleopatra extended their lead to half a length, yet this lead would not prove enough to counter the advantage Boudicca would gain from the course's final bend.

Knowing that they had the final Barnes bend to their advantage, Boudicca pushed on to regain the lead on the approach to the bandstand. With a push towards and through Barnes Bridge, they continued to draw ahead and managed to put clear water between the two crews just beyond the bridge. Cleopatra continued to race for the line but Boudicca, confident in their lead and helped by the Barnes bend, continued to attack the race, crossing the line 2 1/2 lengths ahead of Cleopatra.
