Head of the Charles Regatta 2014
On Sunday we were hugely fortunate to have the opportunity to race at the iconic Head of the Charles Regatta thanks to the support of our sponsors BNY Mellon and Newton IM.
The racing crew was:
Erin Wysocki-Jones (cox; alumnae),
Caryn Davies (strk),
Maxie Scheske (bow).
We arrived in Boston on Wednesday evening and were greeted with beautiful weather! Thursday, Friday and Saturday were spent getting familiar with the course, with its many turns and bridges, and getting some training under our belts in preparation for the race on Sunday. We were also able to explore a little of the Harvard campus, support the Cradles to Crayons community project by packing clothes and toys for disadvantaged children, and attend a couple of BNY Mellon and Newton IM events.
Conditions for the race itself were a little more familiar; cool temperatures and a stiff head wind made the Charles River feel a little like the Tideway! We started bow number 19 in the Championship Women’s Eights and so enjoyed exciting racing as we were able to push past crews and through bridges. Led by Caryn, we got onto a strong rhythm and relished rowing in both the challenging water as well as on the calmer parts of the course.
The results were quickly announced and we were excited to learn that we had finished 4th overall and 2nd university crew. This result is so exciting for our program and is encouraging as we move forward in this historic season. It was enormously beneficial for us, as a crew, to be able to line up against many of the top US crews, and to challenge ourselves to find more against tough competition. Our thanks go to Harvard-Radcliffe Women’s Crew team for hosting us at their boat house, Hudson and Concept II for the loan of equipment, and once again to BNY Mellon and Newton IM for making this trip, and our program, possible.
