British Championships, Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham

Our British Championships quad arrived at the lake in Nottingham early in the morning for a quick pre-paddle to get used to the conditions; although there was already a stiff head wind, the conditions were very manageable and we came off the water excited to race!

By the time we boated for our time trial it was clear the wind had picked up! White capped waves were rolling from at least 750 metres to go up to the start, but we executed our warm up without incident and marshalled, ready to start racing.

Turning into the wind, we set off with a good start, but soon our riggers were smashing through each wave, sending water up over our heads and into the boat. Despite these somewhat challenging conditions, we took it a stroke at a time and pushed on, until we finally hit flatter water at 500 metres to go, where we could step it up towards the finish line.

We came off the water happy with our race, knowing that we could not have done any more! When results were released, we were extremely excited to race in the A final and see if we could improve our position, so we were, of course, very disappointed when racing was cancelled. However, we had a really productive experience, learning a lot from racing in such difficult conditions, and are very happy with our result, finishing 6th overall, and the fastest university crew.

We owe a huge thank you to our sponsors, Newton Investment Management, particularly in this case for our fantastic kit which kept us warm all day!
