The Metropolitan Regatta
With entries in the IM2 4+, IM2 1x and Elite 2- events, this Sunday’s Metropolitan regatta, at a very windy Dorney lake, was a great opportunity for the OUWBC athletes to hit the ground running in the summer racing season.
The day started with a decisive win for the IM2 4+ in their heat, by over 8 seconds over their closest competitor, which contained four athletes and the cox from the winning 2015 Osiris crew. In strong tail wind conditions, the 4+ put in an aggressive performance in the final to take home 1st place, taking 15 seconds off their time in the heat, with a strong sprint in the last 650m.
The conditions would also prove challenging for the single scullers, Anastasia Chitty (OUW president 2014-15), Alice Carrington-Windo and Ruth Siddorn, who took to the water in the IM2 1x. There was a competitive battle between our single scullers in the choppy conditions in the final with the eventual finishing order resulting in an OUWBC clean sweep. Anastasia took the win with Ruth second, and Alice in third.
Madeline Badcott and Lauren Kedar, competing in the Elite 2- event, then put in a strong performance to come 4th in their final.
The regatta was a valuable opportunity to gain race experience prior to Women’s Henley and Henley Royal Regatta later in the summer season, and for the athletes to put their speed in smaller boats to the test. All the participants enjoyed the day’s racing immensely, and we would like to thank the event organisers and our sponsors Newton Investment Management for their continued support.
