British Championships 2015
Last weekend our 2016 Boat Race squad kicked off the racing season at the British Championships competing in a quad and an eight. It was really exciting for the new team to be able to get out on the water, wearing dark blue together for the first time.
The quad was raced by four returning Blues: Anastasia Chitty, Lauren Kedar, Shelley Pearson, and Maddy Badcott – all of whom were excited to compete in this sculling category. As a very new combination the three race format of the British Championships allowed them to learn from each racing experience and to step on their performances throughout the day. They had a solid row in the time trial finishing in fifth place, while the semi-final provided the crew with some excellent and close racing; their second place finish saw them progress into the A final. Getting off to a slow start in the final, they left themselves with a little too much to do in the body of the race, and so crossed the line fifth, in a strong field of crews.
In the University 8+ stroke Joanneke Jansen was joined by Georgina Daniell, Chloe Farrar, Elo Luik, Emma Lukasiewicz, Ruth Siddorn, Emma Spruce and Isabell von Loga with Morgan Baynham-Williams driving them down the course in the coxing seat. The crew were able to put into practise much of what they had been working on as they finished a strong second in the time trial, and then won their semi-final. The racing in the final was close to the line and gave each member of the crew an opportunity to tune up their racing instincts. The OUWBC eight crossed the line in fourth, just behind Oxford Brooke’s in third, Cambridge in second and Imperial College as winners.
The day of racing was really beneficial for the whole team and we’re all excited to take forward the lessons we learnt as we prepare for our next race the Head of the River Fours and beyond.
