President's Profile

Katherine Erickson, a third year DPhil candidate in History, is the Oxford University Women’s Boat Club President for the 2017/18 season.

Born and raised on a farm outside Boston (Mass., USA), Katherine grew up around horses and developed a passion for equestrian sport early in life. She represented the United States at U18 and U21 level in eventing and was US Junior National Champion in 2008, despite breaking her neck in a riding accident as a teenager that required significant physical rehabilitation in order to return to high level competition.

She completed an undergraduate degree at Stanford University (Calif., USA), where she was a four-year athlete on the Stanford Equestrian Team and co-founder of the Stanford Dressage Team in her sophomore year. Whilst at Stanford, she was an Academic All-American, Most Valuable Player, and became the first athlete to ever represent Stanford at the highest level of competition at the intercollegiate national finals in dressage. She graduated in 2012 with degrees in Fine Art and Art History.

It was not until coming to Oxford to pursue an MPhil in Modern British and European History in October 2013, however, that Katherine discovered rowing. She learned to row at Pembroke College Boat Club and then spent a year trialing with the Oxford University Women’s Lightweight Rowing Club (OUWLRC) before coming to OUWBC for the 2016 Boat Race season, where she was a member of Osiris.

Katherine has spent the last year completing the fieldwork portion of her DPhil in postcolonial Ugandan religious architecture and visual culture, spending the first half of the academic year in London and rowing at Tideway Scullers School whilst completing archival research at the National Archives in Kew, and the second half of the year living in Kampala (Uganda) completing site visits and conducting field research.

“I am so excited to return to OUWBC for the 2018 season, and am thrilled and honoured to do so as President. I am deeply indebted to the club, which has introduced me to this incredible sport and nurtured me as both an athlete and a person. I expect the year ahead to not be without challenges, but I look forward to the task.”
